Intermediate Maintenance
Overview
You will be learning by working on your own bicycle, if you do not have one, it may be possible to provide a bicycle given sufficient notice. All tools, plus a pair of gloves, eye protectors and apron will be provided for use during the workshop – please wear appropriate clothing and footwear
Course Material
It is assumed you have the following knowledge – if not, please take our ‘Basic Maintenance’ and/or our ‘Demystifying the Bicycle’ course first.
Safety and general roadworthiness tests including the popular ‘M Check’
Inspection and checking of tools and materials
Basic derailleur gear and brake setup and adjustment
Course contents
Workshop safety, general safety, M-check recap (with Q&A)
Replacing inner and outer gear cables (not Di2, other electronic shifting or specialist/vintage cabling)
Replacing inner and outer brake cables (caliper, cantilever or cable disc brakes)
Chain types, how to check them, how to change them
Removal and refitting of pedals, cranks and bottom bracket
Practise sessions and recap with open Q&A
Please note: This course does not cover hub gears, hub brakes or hydraulic brakes, Fixies welcome.
